Review of Toyota Avanza

Overview

Overview

Toyota Avanza is essentially an entry level MPV designed by Daihatsu, one of the oldest Japanese automobile manufacturer. One of the front-runners in Malaysian markets, Toyota Avanza has also bagged recognition in countries like Thailand Philippines, Thailand, Pakistan etc. Known for its its fuel efficiency, spacious interior design, stability and comfort value Toyota Avanza stands out as a strong competitor in the entry level segment. Toyota Avanza is made available in Malaysian markets under 4 variants - Avanza 1.5S, 1.5G, 1.5E and 1.3E. All the variants barring the base variant employ a 4 speed automatic transmission, while the base variant 1.3E comes with a 5 speed manual transmission. On the outside, Toyota Avanza has improved a lot with high dynamic stability covered by well defined character lines, new radiator grill, roof spoiler, dynamic head-lamp and tail lamp etc. On the interior, one gets hold of MID display on the top variants (pretty impressive considering Avanza is an entry level MPV), steering wheels embedded on audio switches and many more. The top three variants come packing with a 1.5-litre 3SZ-VE 4-cylinder, in-line, 16-valve DOHC petrol engine with chain drive and VVT-i which delivers a decent power output of 105 PS at 6000 rpm, along with a maximum torque of 136 Nm at 4,200 rpm. The base variant however runs on a 1.3-litre K3-VE 4 cylinder, in line, 16 valve DOHC engine with Chain Drive and VVT-i, as a result the maximum output power clocks at 97 PS @6000 rpm along with a 121 Nm maximum torque at 4,200 rpm.

Mileage and Fuel Economy

Being an entry level MPV designed specially for operation in city traffic for the entire family it is essential that Toyota Avanza draws out efficiency when it comes to mileage and fuel economy. The vehicle does not disappoint with a decent 13.2 km/l mileage, more than what you could ask for considering the traffic these days. The tank of Toyota Avanza fills up to 45 litres of fuel.

Power

The power drawn out of Toyota Avanza is not outstanding and yet it is not something that can be overlooked given that an entry level MPV is being talked about. The top end variants employing a 3SZ-VE 1.5 litre 4 cylinder, in line, 16 valve DOC engine with Chain Drive and VVTi bring out a maximum power of 105 PS at 6000 rpm while the maximum torque is 136 Nm at 4200 rpm. The base variant Avanza 1.3E which comes with a manual transmission comes with a K3-VE 4-cylinder, in line, 16 valve DOHC engine with VVTi employing a maximum output power of 97 PS at 6000 rpm while the maximum torque generated is 121 Nm at 4,200 rpm.

Acceleration and Pick Up

Equipped with modest variants having 1.3-litre and 1.5-litre engines, it is expected that the pick up of Toyota Avanza is nothing out of the box and still is decent enough for your requirements. Designed to be used as a multi purpose vehicle, the top variant still reaches the 100 kmph mark at an impressive 14 seconds while Avanza 1.3E does not disappoint either making a 0-100 kmph sprint in 15.8 seconds.

Exterior

For an entry level MPV the redefined exterior of Toyota Avanza's exterior is more than what someone would have expected for the price tag. The elegant designing alongside elegant lines create an aesthetic sense of stability. After going through considerable cosmetic changes over and over, the new generation Avanza sports a sleeker and funkier look on the outside, with revamped side skirtings and radiator grille just making emphatic additions to its overall image. The roof spoiler is kept mounted on a pretty high position, as a result vehicles approaching from a distance get a clear view of your vehicle braking. The headlamp and tail lamp of Avanza have been provided a sporty treatment as well, with fog lamps appointed on the top end 1.5S and 1.5G variants. Toyota Avanza is made available with four color options which are Dark Street Mica (Dark Blue), Maroon Mica, Solid White and Silver.

Exterior Measurements

The exterior dimensions of Toyota Avanza measure at 4150mm x 1630mm x 1695mm (L X B X H), the wheelbase has been increased to make the ride more comfortable clocking at 2,655mm. Other specifications include a ground clearance of 180 mm and a minimum turning radius 4.7 m.

Interior

Step inside Toyota Avanza and all you will witness is spacious comfort especially with its fabric seats. They not only appear comfortable but once you embark on long journeys you can actually enjoy the true Avanza comfort. The combination meter up front of the steering wheel is very well illuminated so that you do not strain your eyes, and for the top variants 1.5S and 1.5G there is provision employed for MID(Multi Information Display) which features possible cruising range alongside fuel consumption. The drive has a reduced NVH level too credits to the interior being fortified with sound insulating materials which cancel out unwanted vibration and noise.

Interior Comfort

Toyota Avanza is manufactured as an entry level MPV and still the features embedded inside the body are more than what someone could wish for considering the price tag. There is a dual blower air conditioning system coupled with dashboard upper vent which makes sure that your family feels utmost comfort. There is enough provision for leg room, and if that was not enough the front row seats are made with a slim back structure increasing knee space by 20mm for the second row passengers. The second row seats feature sliding adjustments while the third row seats have a 50:50 split seat which ensure a very dynamic seating arrangement.

Interior Dimensions

The Avanza is made to be spacious apart from offering comfort. The credit for its spacious interiors goes to the interior dimensions that Avanza sports. Measuring at 2480mm x 1415mm x 1270mm (L X B X H), this means there is enough space for passengers in all the seating rows. With a huge cargo capacity of 899 litres you can almost load up all your basic amenities on the go.

Engine and Performance

Being the first model in the increasing line up of Toyota MUVs in terms of price, we can expect the engine of Toyota Avanza to be decent at best and if nothing else, Avanza fits the bill. The top variant features a 3SZ-VE 1.5 litre 4 cylinder, in line, 16 valve DOC engine with Chain Drive and VVTi bring out a maximum power of 105 PS at 6000 rpm while the maximum torque is 136 Nm at 4200 rpm. The base variant Avanza 1.3E which comes with a manual transmission comes with a K3-VE 4 cylinder,in line, 16 valve DOHC engine with VVTi employing a maximum output power of 97 PS at 6000 rpm while the maximum torque generated is 121 Nm at 4,200 rpm. The turning radius is actually pretty low clocking at 4.7 metres and hence it easily slips out of tight traffic conditions.

Wheels

The entry level variants Toyota Avanza 1.3E and Avanza 1.5E come employed with a 14 inch rim, the difference being that 1.3E has steel rims while all the other variants come employed with Alloy rims. 15 inch alloy rims are sported on 1.5G and 1.5S variants. The tyre size of Toyota Avanza 1.3E and 1.5E measures 185/70 R14 while the tyre size of Avanza 1.5G and 1.5S measures 185/65 R15.

Stereo and Accessories

Integrated Audio system is provided in all the variants of Toyota Avanza with top variants getting hold of 2-DIN Head Unit with Tuner, CD Player, WMA, AUX-Jack, USB and iPod Compatibility alongside 6 speakers. The audio system on the base variant features a 1-DIN Head Unit CD Player with Tuner, MP3, AUX-Jack and USB. 6 speakers are embedded in the 1.5 litre variants as opposed to 4 in the base variant.

Braking and Handling

The MacPherson Strut suspension with stabilizer applied on the front along with a torsion beam suspension on the rear are more than enough to maintain a perfect balance of fuel economy and handling capabilities. Ventilated disc brakes are applied on the front with solid disc brakes getting the rear position to add up to your safety.

Safety and Security

All the basic safety features employed in a top-end Toyota are employed in Avanza too which includes an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) which is coupled with EBD (Electronic Brake-force Distribution) this does not allow wheel lock when the conditions of roads are slippery. The body is made with Toyota forte GOA designing which in the case of collision dissipates the impact force throughout the vehicle to minimize injury to occupants. With reverse sensor, ISOFIX and siren immobilizer security system Toyota Avanza is really as safe as it could be.

Pros

  • Reduced NVH level
