Review Alphard

  • Overview

Toyota Alphard is an MPV (Multi-Purpose Vehicle) with two rear sliding doors, which is introduced to target a particular segment who desires a modern MPV. The car comes with a decent and sophisticated design, which goes well with the present trend. The front look has an LED projector headlamps, the angular shaped 3-D radiator grille with 3 chromed slats, circular fog light consoles and a straight decent looking font bumper design. The car has two sliding doors, which can be accessed with ease. When we talk about the interior, the car features large seats and exclusive rotary function with which passengers can adjust their seats.

As the economy increases (linearly) the demand for luxury features in a four wheeler drive seems to be expanding exponentially and that is the reason why much attention is given to the top end product of every line up by every manufacturer. Toyota Alphard is one such royal automobile, launched back in 2002 and named after the biggest star in the constellation Hydra Toyota Alphard sits pretty on the top of MPV line up of Toyota in Malaysia.

Toyota Alphard is an elite product made to display pride in every ride. Currently in Malaysia, the MUV is manufactured under 2 variants which are Alphard 2.4G and Alphard 3.5G. Alphard 2.4 G is available with a CVT 7 speed Sport sequential shiftmatic auto transmission while the top variant employs a 6 speed Automatic transmission alongside super ECT and with a sequential shift. The styling employed on Toyota Alphard justify its position on top on the price tree-interior and exterior. The front grille itself demands attention, front bumper and fog lamps have been provided a more vibrant finish. There is a whole array of features like twin miniroof up top, automatic rain sensor and front wipers, adaptive front lighting system (available only for 3.5G variant). Interiors also get hold of best in class features like elite ottoman seats, optitron display, smart entry and start button, 7 inch MID display with audio video navigation and reverse camera guidelines.

The base variant Toyota Alphard 2.4G employs a 4 cylinder, in-line, 16 valve DOHC engine with VVT-i technology. The engine however gets a considerable boost with 3.5-litre top variant running on 6 cyliner, V type, 24 valve DOHC with Dual VVT-i technology coupled with ACIS. As a result the maximum power drawn out of the engine of base variant is 170 PS at 6000 rpm inline with a maximum torque measuring 224 Nm at 4000 rpm. The output reaches amazing levels with the huge 3.5-litre engine driving out a maximum power of 275 PS at 6200 rpm alongside a maximum torque of 340 Nm at 4,700 rpm.

Mileage and Fuel Economy

Luxury can not have a price-tag and so is the case with this big luxury-MPV, not much is expected from Toyota Alphard when it comes to your fuel saving capacity. And yet, the base variant produces an impressive mileage measuring 10.4 km/l. The mileage however understandably drops down in the top variant measuring 7.1 km/l. The Alphard can easily carry 65 litres of fuel in one go.

There is no denying that Toyota Alphard sports a beast of an engine wjem it comes to power delivery, especially with its 3.5-litre variant. A huge engine with a 6 cylinder 24 valve DOHC configuration bundled with Dual VVT-i and ACIS delivers impressive power of 275 PS at 6,200 rpm, the maximum torque also gets a huge upgrade because of this and stands at 340 Nm at 4700 rpm. The base variant employing a 2.4-litre petrol engine comes packing with a 4 cylinder 16-valve DOHC configuration alongside VVT-i and draws a decent maximum output power measuring 170 PS at 6000 rpm inline with a maximum torque of 224 Nm at 4000 rpm.

Acceleration and Pick Up

With an engine so powerful, it comes as no surprise that despite a huge kurb weight Alphard achieves the 100 mark at a very decent 11.9 seconds displaying a top speed of 180 km/hr. (figures for 2.4-litre variant). The top end variant is way ahead however, clocking 0-100 km/hr in a meager 8.3 seconds and reaching a maximum speed of 200 km/hr.

Toyota Alphard disses all the notions that a family minivan cannot be turned into a trendy automobile. The design detailing given to Alphard displays luxury in every aspect. At the front, the radiator grille including a sub grille are covered with chrome finishing making the front more appealing. To make the design more elegant the front bumper is raised up while the fog lamps (given chrome finishing) look elite as well. Also the dark door garnish on the inside and LED rear combination lamps seem to go along the body itself. A novelty in itself, double moon-roofs are provided along with the futuristic feature of rain sensor on the windshield complimented by automatic front wipers. 3.5-litre variant gets access to set of features which are HID (High Intensity Discharge) headlamps bundled with adaptive with AFS (Adaptive front lighting system) so that your visibility adjusts automatically on the curvature of the roads.

Exterior Measurements

Keeping comfort as a feature of prime importance, a huge wheelbase is applied to Toyota Alphard measuring 2,950 mm. But the huge size does not really mean that the kingpin MUV isnt flexible, with a minimum turning radius measuring 5.7 metres it is possible to maneuver the Alphard out of heavy traffic conditions. Overall dimensions of both the variants measure 4870mm x 1830mm x 1905mm (L X B X H) with a ground clearance of 160 mm.

You are in for a joy ride once inside Toyota Alphard and you know it with one look at the ottoman seats which look like something taken out of a business class flight. In front of the wheel is a highly efficient optitron MID display which displays cruising range (cruise control is available in both models), overall full efficiency, temperature, instantaneous fuel efficiency and many more. A 7 inch capacitive multi touch screen sits pretty in the middle with more functions than you can get hold of, also there are built in navigation maps of Brunei, Singapore and Malaysia inside the navigator which is customized with Toyota network. Aesthetics are further incremented with an LED ceiling illumination, in addition to all this there is also amazing innovation fitted on the windshield with electro chromic mirror which adjusts the glare amount for better visibility when you are driving.

Interior Comfort

The comfort inside Toyota is unparalleled and you will feel almost as comfortable as sitting at home with power adjustable captain seats appointed on the first two rows. These beige colored seats feature full reclining functionalities bundled with folded footrests. The head and arm rests are also extended, as mentioned before it is almost like traveling in first class. With the triple zone automatic climate control air conditioning system employed with Toyota's patent nanoe technology every passenger inside the MUV feels the same temperature level. Only to add to your comfort there is a 8 way power adjustable driver's seat which comes with a memory function (so that the seat returns to default position on a single touch).

Interior Dimensions

Toyota Alphard comes with a huge boot space, comfortable to carry considerable amount of luggage for the whole family. There is enough provision for legroom (added with footrest), especially in the second row and headroom.

Engine and Performance

With one of the most relentless and dynamic engines in class, the 3.5-litre 6 cylinder 24 valve engine with Dual VVT-i and ACIS of the the top variant delivers a maximum power output of 275 PS at 6200 rpm alongside a maximum torque measuring 340 Nm at 4700 rpm. These figures are not ordinary and tell us just how muscle filled Alphard really is. The maximum power output for the entry level variant isn't disappointing either by any standards with a more than decent maximum power output of 170 PS at 6000 rpm along with a 224 Nm maximum torque at 4000 rpm. In terms of performance, 6 speed Automatic transmission with super ECT and sequential shift ensures optimal gear positioning for the top end 3.5-litre variant. The entry level Alphard 2.4G employs a 7 speed sports sequential shiftmatic transmission which enhances your fuel efficiency.

For a better stability and grip 17 inch alloy rims are embedded in the MUV, the tyres covering these rims seem reliable enough to provide stability at high speeds. As such, the tyre size measure 215/60 R17.

Stereo and Accessories

The Alphard has luxury and elegance written all over it. When it comes to in-car entertainment the Alphard doesn't disappoint at all. The audio system employed in Toyota Alphard is best in class with 2-DIN Head Unit DVD Player with 7 Inch Capacitive Touch Screen, Smartphone Connectivity, WiFi, Internet Browser, Voice Recognition, HDMI, USB, Bluetooth, Navigation System & Reverse Camera with Guide Lines. In total there are 8 speakers appointed in the vehicle. The overall audio performance is quite impressive.

Braking and Handling

The MacPherson Strut suspension with stabilizer applied on the front along with a torsion beam suspension on the rear are more than enough to maintain a perfect balance of fuel economy and handling capabilities. Ventilated disc brakes are applied on the front with solid disc brakes getting the rear position to add up to your safety.

Safety and Security

Your ride could be best in class when it comes to features and looks, but without adequate provisions for safety, all that goes to vain. Thankfully, the safety options provided are also best in class with Toyota Alphard which employs 7 SRS airbags, VSC (Vehicle Stability Control), Anti-Lock Braking system with Electronic Brake force and Brake Assist, front and rear parking sensors, a security alarm system with immobiliser and siren, WIL seats and Toyota's premium security and solar film.
