Review of Perodua Alza

Overview

Overview

Made by the engineering craftsmanship of Daihatsu Boon Luminas and Toyota Passo Sette, Perodua Alza is one of the front runners in sales of one of the two biggest names in Malaysian auto-market. As such, Perodua Alza is launched as an entry level MPV aimed for small families and uses a 1.5-litre cut-down engine of Daihatsu Terios and Toyota Avanza. The name ALZA is derived from ALZAR a Spanish word which means "to raise". The main competitor of Alza in the indigenous market is Proton's Exora which provides slightly more technologically sound features like BCM (Body Control Module) and yet, Perodua Alza has been outperforming its competition in terms of sales by considerable margins credits to the association with the big brand "Toyota" on its engine. Perodua Alza finds its way inside the market as a sum of five different variants which are Perodua Alza 1.5 Standard (GX and EZ), 1.5 SE(GS and ZS) and 1.5 AV. Alza GX and GS come employed with a 5 speed manual transmission while Perodua Alza 1.5 EZ, ZS and AV come packing with 4-speed auto transmission. SE and Advanced variants are available with a variety of exciting color combinations like Metallic Red, Metallic Silver, Metallic Purple, Metallic Black and Solid White. Major redesigning has been done on the exterior which involves a new aerodynamic spoiler design, black rear garnish, clear lens tailer lamp, all sport bumper and skirtings, a new front grille etc. All the variants of Perodua Alza employ a 3SZ-VE engine which works on a DOHC 16 Valve (4 valves per cylinder) mechanism with DVVT bringing out a maximum output power measuring 104 PS at 6000 rpm in line with a maximum output torque worth 136 Nm at 4400 rpm.

Mileage and Fuel Economy

Being essentially a family utility vehicle it becomes all the more important for the drive to deliver superior mileage. The 1.5-litre engine of Perodua Alza alongside delivering a decent power output also brings forth an efficient average fuel consumption capacity (driving both in city and on highway). The average mileage of Perodua Alza measures 12.8 km/l, which is decent to say the least considering that we are talking about a heavy MPV. The fuel tank of this MPV fills up to 42 litres of petrol in one go.

Power

Working on electronic fuel injection system and appointing a 1.5-litre 4 valve 16 cylinder 3SZ-SE detuned engine of Daihatsu Terios and Toyota Avanza with DVVT technology, the maximum output power drawn from Perodua Alza is 104 PS at 6000 rpm along with a maximum output torque measuring 136 Nm at 4400 rpm. Considering the overall weight of the car, the power figures are not at all disappointing for the Alza.

Acceleration and Pick Up

Perodua Alza, or "Perodua Myvi on steroids" as the locals call it gets superior pick up credits to the 1.5-litre engine with Toyota branding. As such, from a halt the car reaches 100 km/hr mark in 12.8 seconds. The top speed that can be reached is an impressive 180 km/hr.

Exterior

The exterior of Perodua Alza has been redesigned to give it a more sporty look, so that Alza does not only target families but appeals to a variety of audiences. The most noticeable inclusions include side mouldings, clear lens tail lamp, aerodynamic spoiler design, black rear garnish, all sport bumper and skirtings, a new front grille, new alloy rim design and clear signal front lens. In addition to these standard additions, 1.5 SE and 1.5 Advanced variants come including front fog lamps, rear spoiler, rear wiper, security film, tinted film and back door garnish. To sum up, while the standard and SE variants come packing with electronic side mirrors, 1.5 Advanced has employed mirrors which retract as well.

Exterior Dimensions

Perodua Alza has a large wheelbase measuring 2750 mm but that does not really justify enough legroom on the inside being a 3 row compact and lack of legroom is certainly an issue with the MPV. Having a minimum turning radius measuring 5.2 metres, Alza can ease its way out of heavy traffic situations without much difficulty. The overall dimensions of the drive measure 4230mm x 1695mm x 1620mm for 1.5 Standard(both auto and manual transmission), the top end variants sport a slightly longer 4270mm x 1695mm x 1620mm overall dimensions credits to the additional bumper (L x W x H) respectively.

Interior

Stepping inside this MPV, the first noticeable features are the all black/beige dashboard which looks very elegantly designed. The all black interior available with 1.5 SE and and 1.5 advanced adds to the aesthetic panache of the vehicle. The steering wheel in itself is very efficient packed with Audio control switches. The optitron meter combination has been amber illumination in the standard variants, in case of top variants however, this color changes to white. Aesthetics are much more improved if you upgrade to 1.5 SE and Advanced with silver painted door armrests and chrome finished inside handles. Also, 1.5 Advanced employs leather seats in its cabin, the ultimate ornamental delight.

Interior Comfort

Perodua is known for fitting out of range comfort features inside the compact bodies of its products. In all the Alza variants, to create more space 50:50 foldable, reclining and sliding seats are appointed on the second row while the third row seats accommodate a 50:50 foldable mechanism. The basic comfort features included in all the variants are power steering, 4 speakers, MID display, power windows and reverse sensor. Shopping hook, a steering wheel with audio switches which is leather wrapped and silver painted and driver's seat adjuster find their way in both 1.5 SE and 1.5 Advanced. Also, with 1.5 Advanced you get hold of additional out-of-ordinary features like new designed 6.5 inch LCD multimedia system along with reverse camera and roof mounted speakers.

Interior Measurement

Perodua Alza maximizes its wheel base by offering as much as 1415 mm of interior width to the passengers. Passengers with an average height can find enough headroom with interior height going upto 1310 mm in the Alza, however taller passengers may find it a little cramped while seating.

Engine and Performance:

This is one segment which gives Perodua Alza an edge over Proton Exora although lacking in some technology features. Perodua Alza a de-tuned 1.5-litre Toyota Avanza and Daihatsu Terios engine. This 3SZ-VE engine comes bundled with a DOHC, 4 cylinder, 16 valve per cylinder technology with DVVT and EFI, the result of which is efficient fuel economy, smooth pick up, minimal NVH ratio and more clean gas emissions. The maximum power drawn from this engine is a decent 104 PS at 6000 rpm in line with a maximum starting torque measuring 136 Nm at 4400 rpm.

Stereo and Accessories

The base variant 1.5 Standard has a primitive flush type radio CD- player with MP3/WMA, take a step up and with 1.5 SE you get hold of Flush type radio CD-player with USB, Bluetooth and MP3/WMA, but the clear winner by a long margin in this category is 1.5 Advanced which has employed a 6.5 inch LCD touchscreen which can view your phonebook contacts, supports USB, SD card, DVD, Bluetooth, MP3/WMA and comes embedded with GPS Navigation capabilities.

Wheels

The standard variants employ a 15 inch alloy rim opposed to aesthetically superior 15 inch titanium silver alloy rims in 1.5 SE and 1.5 advanced. The tyre size with these 15 inch rims measures 185/55 R15.

Braking and Handling

On the front this family MPV has employed disc brakes with boosters while appointing drum brakes (leading and trailing) on the rear. In addition to this there is a parking brake which operates mechanically on rear wheels. Handling is controlled by MacPherson strut suspension on the front coupled with Torsion beam suspension on the rear.

Safety and Security

Perodua Alza sports a collision resistant body which is designed in such a way that the impact of collision is spread along the pillars of the drive and does not affect the driver. ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) with EBD (Electronic Brake Force Distribution) and BA (Brake Assist) prevents wheel lock on slippery surfaces and keeps the drive on track. In addition to these, dual SRS airbags are provided on the front to minimize injury to front passengers in case of a collision. Seat belt pre-tensioner, ISOFIX child restraint system, seat belt warning, alarm and immobiliser complete your safety package.

  • Feature packed top variants
