A car that has been ruling its segment for more than three decades, the Honda Accord is all-new for this year with a bold new exterior design and two engine options for vivid power requirements. Not only it is new in terms of design, the cabin is also enriched with improved elements, giving a refreshed premium feel to the occupants. The key characteristics of this D-segment sedan remain intact, which include smooth handling, spacious interiors, reasonable pricing and economical engine, helping it to gain our appreciation after all these years.

Interior & Features

Interior designing, comfort, and styling are what matters the most. And the overall progress of the car is nothing short of remarkable on the inside, where Honda has unloaded all its guns into a decent package of luxury and technology with large improvements made to the cabin. Thankfully, the previous version's messy and haphazard dashboard is long gone for good and is replaced by a layout which on top of being user-friendly is powered by a selection of features which feel much more luxurious than before. Honda Accord makes the precursor's mismatched buttons on the center with a futuristic control option which gives you the advantage of not one but 2 huge screens. There is a boosted 8 inch TFT display with a navigation display sitting pretty on top of it, on the second tier there is a smaller touchscreen for your entertainment and information purposes and if that was not enough, there is a climate control option on the third tier. For Honda Accord VTi-L 2.0 and 2.4 leather seats, hands-free telephone support, electric driver seat adjustment, and leather seating are part of the standard equipment list.

One gets a remarkable array of options available, it will be highly surprising if you don’t find the interior surpassing your expectations. The steering wheel in itself for example contains information switch, audio control switch, hands free telephone connection and cruise control system. With 2.0 and 2.4 VTi-L your comfort level is taken to a whole new level with leather seats, driver's side automated 8 way driver switch, manual side door sunshade, power and rear sunshade and rear air conditioning, and the Honda forte NAVI console HFT.

With 2018 Accord, Honda aimed to offer something sporty and it has achieved its goal with current offering. The muscle car inspired grille and sharp headlights may not appeal to everyone but, it certainly makes the Accord stand apart in the segment. What is more delightful is the restrained exterior detailing, that looks good over some of the other Honda’s latest releases. Honda has also restricted the dimensions of the 2018 Accord a bit and it is shorter in terms of length and height than the outgoing model.

This change in the car’s dimension combined with the new curved hood complements the overall profile in an effective manner. The outer lines which were previously more edgier and expressive have been toned down to provide a much more matured and classy outfit, this makes the car look bigger and more marketable despite the fact that dimensions have actually shrunk.

Engine & Fuel Consumption

There is no change in the engine options with the latest offering and the Malaysian market still gets two engine options. The first is a 2.0-litre VTi, 4-cylinder, 16 Valve SOHC, i-VTEC engine which delivers a maximum power output of 155 PS at 6500 rpm and peak torque of 190 Nm at 4300 rpm. The second is a bigger yet economical, 2.4-litre VTi, 4 Cylinder 16 Valve DOHC unit with Earth Dreams Technology that has the potential to churn out a maximum power output of 175 PS at 6,200 rpm and peak torque of 225 Nm at 4,000 rpm. Both these engine options are further coupled to a 5-speed automatic transmission, with no manual option on offer.

The refreshed feel of the Accord is well matched with the powertrain options on the cars and none of the available options lag in terms of offering impressive performance. Clocking 0-100 kmph mark takes around 10 seconds with the smaller engine while this figure gets down to 7 with the bigger unit. Both the units offer smooth power delivery but, the larger unit releases a rush of torque that can push the front tires in first gear to a great extent.

Braking Safety

One of the prime additions in Accord's line up is the addition of a Collision Mitigation Brake System, the brakes are special because they make use of RADAR to check if there are any cars, stationary or moving in its nearby premises. The front brake is a Ventilated disc brake while the rear brake is a solid disc one.

As stylish as your drive is, it also needs to be equally stable and safe and Honda is one such brand which pays huge attention to this front. Accord comes with i-SRS front and passenger airbags, whereas, for the top variants you have the option of OPDS and side curtain airbags. G-CON (G-Force Control Technology) absorbs the impact of a collision and minimises the level of injury in case of an accident. A variety of features like Multi Angle Rear View Camera (2.0 VTi-L and 2.4VTi-L), hill start assist and Honda lane watch (2.4 VTi-L) are also available to make the ride safer.
