Honda Accord is a sedan which is more popular among customers. The base trim for the sedan is the LX, coming with a four-cylinder engine and six-speed manual transmission. Included interior features are an automatic dual-zone A/C system, the Bluetooth capability, and a rearview camera. It also consists of Honda's i-mid system which lies within an eight-inch color screen and can also be used to control audio fed to the four speakers within the LX. Besides a USB interface and MP3/Auxiliary input jack, its entertainment portfolio also consists of internet radio compatibility.
Honda Accord is one of the oldest and strongest players in world of automobiles. Making its first appearance in 1976, the Honda Accord is pretty much one of the most loved car globally, so much that a motley of vehicles like coupes, hatchbacks, crossovers and wagons have applied the Accord tag during the years.
In Malaysia D-segment mid range models rule the street like no other, and a balanced product in this array must include a strong middle range model. This is where Honda with its premium offering coupled with equipments that can entice buyers easily, is way ahead of the competition. Certainly, Honda Accord is everything that fits this bill.
Like the precursor, the latest Accord is also lined up with three variants: the base model 2.0 VTi to the high end 2.4 VTi-L. Placed comfortably between the two is 2.0 VTi-L. You are bound to get more than you would have expected even at the base model with equipment manifests including rear air con vents, auto headlamps, dual zone climate control, stability control, ISOFIX mounts and one touch signals. We however would strongly recommend a step up from the base model which includes a keyless entry, leather seats, cruise control, hands free telephone support, satellite navigation and electric driver seat adjustment to name a few. With a bigger engine and a major little variations being just on the exterior like LED headlamps, active cornering lights and larger rims and a much higher price tag, 2.4 VTi-L seems like only for the big pocket holders.
Honda Accord 2.0 VTi and 2.0 VTi-L are powered by a 4 cylinder 16 Valve SOHC i-VTEC engine which draws a maximum power of 155 PS at 6500 rpm. While the much hyped Earth Dreams Technology with a DOHC i-VTEC engine comes into play in the 2.4 VTi-L variant generating a massive power of 175 PS at 6200 rpm. Tanks of all the three variants fill upto 65 litre of fuel.
Mileage and Fuel Economy
Once you buy a car that becomes your fixed investment. However your variable pricing for the vehicle is directly related to its mileage on a daily basis and hence it is very important for a car to be economically sound alongside being aesthetically appealing. Keeping malaysian traffic and the engine mounted in mind, we think that Honda Accord does a pretty decent job. The entry level 2.0 VTi and mid range 2.0 VTi-L consume fuel at the rate of 11.3 km/l and the top end 2.4 VTi-L clocks mileage of 10.5 km/l. These figures are not too overwhelming but they certainly cannot be overlooked.
Honda Accord gives a pretty decent output in the 2.0 litre engine variants when it comes to power and torque. With a 4 cylinder 16 valve SOHC i-VTEC engine the output power drawn in VTi and VTi-L is 155 PS at 6500 rpm while the maximum drawn torque is 190 Nm at 4300 rpm. The top end 2.4 VTi-L has a beast for an engine with 175 PS maximum power at 6200 rpm and a maximum torque of 225 Nm at 4000 rpm all credits to Earth Dreams Technology.
Acceleration & Pick Up
Surprisingly, despite all the hype surrounding the Earth Dreams Technology in this segment the figures do not back up the top end variant 2.4 VTi-L which races 0-100kmph in a rather dissapointing 9.8 seconds. The more economical variants for a 2-litre engine do not dissapoint with 2.0 VTi and VTi-L providing an acceleration rate of 0-100 km/hr in 9.5 seconds.
One look at the new Honda Accord and you would notice that Honda has not opted the way it is proudly known for - innovation. It has adopted a very straight forward and safe approach with Accord's styling. The outer lines which were previously more edgier and expressive have been toned down to provide a much more matured and classy outfit, this makes the car look bigger and more marketable despite the fact that dimensions have actually shrunk. Some new additions have been a part of high end upholstry with LED Headlamps (only for 2.4 VTI-L) provided with daytime running lights, 2.4 VTi-L also gets hold of large 18 inch rims making it a more steady structure and active cornering lights.
It is safe to say that within the D segment Honda Accord is one of the most spacious cars which can be confirmed by the width of the car. The overall dimensions of the car measure 4870 mm x 1850 mm x 1465 mm (l x b x h). Wheelbase of the car is 2,775 mm which directly means a lot of space in the interior for passengers and equipments.
Interior designing, comfort and styling is what matters the most. And the overall progress of the car is nothing short of remarkable on the inside, where Honda has unloaded all its guns into a decent package of luxury and technology with large improvements made to the cabin. Thankfully, the previous version's messy and haphazard dashboard is long gone for good and is replaced by a layout which on top of being user friendly is powered by a selection of features which feel much more luxurious than before. Honda Accord makes the precursor's mismatched buttons on the centre with a futuristic control option which gives you the advantage of not one but 2 huge screens. There is a boosted 8 inch TFT display with a SAT Navigation display sitting pretty on top of it, on the second tier there is a smaller touch screen for your enterntainment and information purposes and if that was not enough, there is a climate control option on the third tier. For Honda Accord VTi-L 2.0 and 2.4 leather seats, hands free telephone support, electric driver seat adjustment and leather seating are part of the standard equipments made available.
One gets a remarkable array of options available, it will be highly surprising if you dont find the interior surpassing your expectations. The steering wheel in itself for example contains information switch, audio control switch, hands free telephone connection and cruise control system. With 2.0 and 2.4 VTi-L your comfort level is taken to a whole new level with leather seats, driver's side automated 8 way driver switch, manual side door sunshade, power and rear sunshade and rear airconditiong, and the Honda forte NAVI console HFT.
Lack of headroom and legroom has always been some sort of concern with Honda premiums, amazingly the legroom and headroom has also improved with the launch of new Honda Accord with front and rear headroom giving total measurements of 39.1mm and 37.5mm respectively. The legroom for Honda Accord is 42.5mm and 38.5mm respectively for front and rear.
Engine and Performance
This is the segment where the top end Honda Accord 2.4 VTi-L provides a major upgrade over the lower models. With a brand new Earth Dreams Technology and a more efficient DOHC i-VTEC powered motor for 2.4 VTi-L reaches tremendous numbers with maximum power output being 175 PS at 6200 rpm coupled with a maximum torque output of 225 Nm at 4000 rpm. You can see a significant difference in the figures of lower variants where a SOHC i-VTEC engine generates a 155 PS at 6500 rpm and 190 Nm maximum torque extracted at 4,300 rpm.
The Honda Accord 2.0 VTi and 2.0 VTi-L are in posession of a 17 inch alloy wheel rim with the tyre size being 225/50 R17. A significant upgrade has been provided in case of top end 2.4 VTi-L with 18 inches wheels and tyre size of 235/45 R18.
Stereo and Accessories
The epicentre of all your entertainment, music and video demands are met at the centre of your dashboard with a 8 inch TFT display. All the three variants are available with Intelligent Multi information Display which is capable of displaying colored outputs, apart from that you have for your convineance a single CD Touch audio system compatible with WMA MP3/ iPod/ USB. A dedicated USB 2.0 or 3.0 and AUX wire connects readily in the system, also to boost the sound there are 6 speakers available. A DVD player, Voice Navigation system and HDD Audio are some additional features included in 2.0 VTi-L and 2.4 VTi-L, also the premium 2.4 VTi-L occupies superior sound with subwoofer.
Braking and Handling
One of the prime additions in Accord's line up is the addition of a Collision Mitigation Brake System, the brakes are special because they make use of RADAR to check if there are any cars, stationary or moving in its nearby premisis. The front brake is a Ventilated disc brake while the rear brake is a solid disc one.
Safety and Security
As stylish as your drive is, it also needs to be equally stable and safe and Honda is one such brand which pays huge attention into this. Accord comes with i-SRS front and passanger airbags, whereas for the top variants you have the option of OPDS and side curtain airbags. G-CON (G-Force Control Technology) absorbs the impact of collision and minimises the level of injury in case of an accident. A variety of features like Multi Angle Rear View Camera (2.0 VTi-L and 2.4VTi-L), hill start assist and Honda lane watch (2.4 VTi-L) are also available.
